Too Hot to Haut? I Think Not!
Okay! Summer is here and it is hot, hot, hot!
What to do with chocolate in the summer. Turn hot to haut!! Instead of serving heavy baked desserts for your fancy summer meals, barbeques and picnics, why not enjoy sharing and pairing. Offer a box of Soma Truffles for dessert alongside a fine summer wine or two.
Here are a few hints to help you select some wines to try: (wine.about.com)
“When pairing wines with chocolate, your best bet is to match lighter, more elegant flavored chocolates with lighter bodied wines. Start with a more subtle white chocolate and end on a dark or bittersweet chocolate.”
Here are some pairs you might like to try:
White chocolate truffles… and Sherry or Zinfandel
Milk chocolate truffles… and Pinot Noir, Merlot or Riesling. Even a Ruby Port
Dark and bittersweet truffles…and Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel. Also Tawny or Vintage Port.
What if wine is not your summer beverage of choice? Ever heard of pairing beer and chocolate? Well neither had I till I heard of this event hosted by Michelob: A Beer and Chocolate Pairing event at the Chocolate Bar in Houston Texas. Kevin Scott who writes for the examiner.com had this summary of the event: “Excited to be invited to an event hosted by the number one brewer in the world, yes but the marriage of chocolate and brewskies sounded more like a relationship destined for the Jerry Springer Show than an Oprah Winfrey show highlighting successful marriages.”
But surprised by his experience, he ended on this note: “What was once an unheard of match now seems a natural progression in the world of beer and food pairings. Chocolate and beer complement each other rather nicely, with each providing a definite presence that either accentuates the flavors of both or soothes some of the harshness of the other.” Once again, start your beer pairing experiments working from light to dark with both the beer selection and your truffles. And have fun! After all, it’s all in the name of keeping cool…..
